Dotaz Data refresh says its succeded but it not refreshed

    Hi,

One of our 10 reports isn't refreshed even if its reported as data refresh succeded! This report is rather big, 28 datasources with one of those about 4 milj rows. If I open it in excel and do a manual refresh we get the correct figures. The scheduled refresh takes about 4 minutes. All the other reports takes 10 - 50 secunds.

    Any ideas about this?

    Hi Larra,

Have you set "refresh data on opening the file" property to powerpivot connection setting on the workbook? You can check it by opening the workbook with Excel client and go to Data menu and click on "Connections". Under Workbook Connections window click on the Properties button and under Usage tab please make sure that you have "Refresh data when opening the file" checkbox checked. This will allow your workbook to refresh data every time you open it in the browser, the other option is to set Data Refresh on the workbook in the PowerPivot gallery on a schedule basis.

    Thanks,
    Challen Fu

    Hi Challen Fu,

We have set all of our reports as Data Refresh in the PowerPivot Gallery. The report I'm refering to has a message as 'Data refresh succeded' if I rightclick on the icon to the right in the Gallery.

The problem is that it's refreshed!

If I open it and do a manual refresh it's getting refreshed.

    Hi Challen,

This report has no localfiles and it's been running smooth with Data Refresh but suddenly it doesn't refresh even it's saying 'Refresh succeded!

Does logging out (closing your browser) and logging back in solve the problem?

    Hi Larra,

If you download the file, is it updated? Excel Services keep it in a cache, and it might take sometime for the cache to expire and you to be able to see it refreshed. For instance, let's say you open in the browser a workbook A. Then the scheduled data refresh kicks in, and it succeeds. At this moment, the workbook will be updated in SharePoint. If you open it in the browser again, Excel Services will open the cached version, and not the latest version that just has been updated. You will see the older version.

Setting the workbook to "Refresh on open" will make ECS to refresh the "cached" version of the workbook all the time. So you will always see the most updated version. On the other hand, it will *always* update the cached version of the workbook... so it might be slower. This "refresh on open" option you set in Excel client, while editing the data tab, connections properties.

    Hope the helps!

Worked for me, thanks for the info.  Must be something new with Denali and SharePoint.  Maybe not though...
