Cannot Check out Excel file

Question

Hi

One of the users don't get the yellow bar 'Check Out Required to modify this server workbook, you must first check it out.' and the Check out button when she tries to open 2 specific files  in Excel. When she clicks on the files, it a 'save or open' dialog appears and when she select open she does not see the check out option on the excel file.

She can see the yellow bar on any other document.

When I try on my PC, the files directly open and I see the yellow bar and I am able to check out.

When I try on her PC, result is same for me.

When I try with her user, on my PC - able to open the file & check out inside excel.

I know she can go over the menu and choose Check out on the library but she wants to do it inside excel (all other people can do and for all other files it works)

Is the site in her intranet sites in her IE security settings?

Is she running the same version of office that you are?  Is there any difference on the documents that she is having issues with and the others that she is not.  Are they xlsx and the other are xls or vice versa?  I'm actually having an issue that is sort of similar with an excel spreadsheet on SharePoint Online, but in my case it won't allow any user to upload and overwrite a spreadsheet, or more accurately it gives us an error, but then there is a new instance of the document in the doc lib after we click out of the error screen.

Hi Cerenn,

What browser is set as default?

I've had this before where Firefox is set as the default.  Trying to open an excel file you get the following message:

You are trying to open ***.xlsx.  What should Firefox do with this file?

You have the option to open it or save it but when opened you can't check it out.

I resolved it by changing the default browser from Firefox to IE.
