I can't copy the help text to clipboard!

    Dotaz

  • I am using VS2010 SP1 and when I go to help, I can't copy the help text to clipboard!

I tried ctr+c and right mouse click, but copy is not a menu option.

    Any suggestions - Thanks.

  • Someone else reported that Ctrl+C was not always reliable for them.

However like Vicky I have not had an issue with Ctrl+C to copy text.

  • Hello ForEverLearning,

    Thanks for your post.

I am sorry for your issue I feel confused, could you please offer me more information about copying the help test to the clipboard?

Do you configure your Visual Studio to use online or local help? On my side, if I use online help, it is possible for me to Copy menu when I select the texts and right-click. And if I use local help, although the Copy menu is not available however the CTRL+C is working.

    Thanks.

  • Hi

    Thanks for your help.

I am using local help (help viewer 1.1 on Vista with VS 2010 SP1).

When I try Ctrl+C, it does not work after the first time. I guess Rob Chandler comment is accurate.

    Thanks and regards,

    EK

  • Maybe it is a focus problem. I always use the mouse to click into the content pane. Then I use the kb to Ctrl+C.

Maybe my mouse click is why I get reliable Copy?

But you probably use the mouse to select anyway.. so that would not be the reason.

Maybe because I'm Win 7 and you are Vista?

    Or I'm using IE8?

    Thanks

    Rob

  • Well. if no one else is having problem, it may be because of some service running on my machine or some other issue regarding my installation.

Please consider this issue closed (Although. CTR+C should appear on the menu!).

    Thanks for your help.

  • CTRL+C does not work in my help viewer, either.

    I am using IE9 and SP1.

  • Let me try with IE9 + VS 2010 SP1 + Win 7 64 bit ...  Not a problem here.

    What Windows are your running?

  • Win 7 x64 as well.

Bizarrely, however, I can now get it to copy (just about) any time I like.  I have had this issue for more than just today (I just got annoyed with it enough to do a search to find out about it).

    One thing I have found:

    1) If you highlight something and leave the window and come back, sometimes it's still highlighted (and sometimes it's not - seems to be a crapshoot).  Ctrl+C does not work when you return to the window.

    2) If you right click over the text (and subsequently remove the menu) and then Ctrl+C, it will not copy even though it's still highlighted.

It's *possible* my past experiences have all been because of a combination of 1+2, but I seriously doubt it.  I'm not the type that will right click to copy UNLESS Ctrl+C doesn't work.  I'm also not in the habit of highlighting text that I'm not going to copy right away.  I suspect there's an itermittent problem since I can now seemingly copy/paste freely for the first time (did you hack my computer!? :)

  • Interesting. Certainly embedding IE WebBrowser can be tricky where it comes to focus and KB.

  • I came across a work around this problem.

In help, focus on the page you want to copy text from, right mouse click, copy the URL of the help page, open the browser and paste in the url.

This will display the help page in a browser window outside the help application. Now you can use copy as usual.

  • This is the same problem I've just run into. If you look at the screen shot below, the text I've highlightted is the one I want to send to OneNote. Copy/Paste would be ok. It won't let me copy it. Only the little code snippet, which with my litle understanding of lamdas, does me no good. thanks for the workaround.

  • Obviously a problem. Either that or another program is clobbering Ctrl+C.
We obviously need the Copy menu item as backup.

Can everyone please report the Copy problem to
    http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/

and maybe link back to this thread for extra info. Thanks!

  • Do you think it could be an Internet Explorer plugin?

If you disabled the IE Browser plugins does it work?

But then ForEverLearningsaid once the help was opened in the browser it was OK to Copy. Out of interest... Did Ctrl+C work in Internet Explorer Browser? Or were you using a "Copy" menu item?

  • Hi Rob, ctrl+c works in the browser and in the browser there is the normal menu that you get when you press right hand mouse button. So the browser is behaving normally.

One thing I may have forgotten to mention is that I installed VS2010 before I installed the Internet Explorer 9 and then upgraded the browser when the upgrade became available. Maybe the VS2010 is hard bound to the older IE version in some way.

  • Thanks for checking.

My system is Win 7 64bit + IE9 installed later and it's not having any problems.

I'm trying to think what programs you may have that would be stealing the key stroke. But you say CTRL+C works fine in IE browser... so why does particular app have a problem.

Using Reflector to decompile the viewer source showed nothing (really looks they are letting the browser handle CTRL+C).

So disabling IE9 plugins did not help either?

  • I've also never had a problem with copying text in IE.

I do have a weird (likely totally unrelated) problem that I *think* just started occurring in visual studio, which is that my Enter button press as tied to one of my mouse buttons no longer works in it.

For the record, this is unrelated.  I just recently started running VS as an Administrator to work with some WCF stuff and apparently ipoint.exe also needs to run as administrator in order to work in that application...

I also double checked that "Administratorness" wasn't the problem with the help viewer, and it doesn't seem to be.

  • Help Viewer version 2.0 has just been released with the VS 11 dev preview.

I don't see a "Copy" in the menu.

  • Well.. Ctrl+C works but we were hoping for a "Copy" menu item as well right?

The good thing is this is an unreleased product and they want feed back on it :-)
So  again http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/ is the place to make comment / bug reports.

  • Ctrl+C is fixed in Visual Studio 11 Beta with Help 2.0 Beta.  Select text and right click to get the context menu, which will contain a Copy item.

  • Same problem using VS2010 SP under Windows 7.

Despite Ctrl-C not working as a work around, the real question is why is there no normal copy function?
